The Department of Theater and Dance is committed to engaging students in creative practice and scholarly study across the disciplines of theater and dance. Students in our courses are encouraged to explore the cross-disciplinary connections between these two performing arts; to link theory with practice; and to situate theater and dance as vital components in cultural, social, and political processes with both global and historical reach. The Department exposes students to a wide range of studio techniques and approaches in order to enhance their skills as performers and to provide them with the necessary resources for the creation of new work. Above all, the Department values experimentation in both artistic practice and intellectual inquiry, and seeks to nurture student artists capable of expressing their ideas and their passions with clarity and purpose.

This course is an exploration of the basic techniques, styles, concepts, and composition of dance and movement. The course introduces and explores dance movements in the 20th Century through historical analysis and movement. No previous training is required or assumed.
Dance 1 is held on Fridays from 9:00-11:55 during the Fall & Spring semesters.

The Dance Department at Wesleyan is a contemporary program with a global perspective. The curriculum, faculty research, and pedagogy all center on the relationships between theory and practice, embodied learning, and the potential dance making has to be a catalyst for social change. Within that rigorous context, students encounter a diversity of approaches to making, practicing, and analyzing dance in an intimate learning atmosphere. The program embraces classical forms from ballet, Bharata Natyam, Javanese, and Ghanaian, to experimental practices that fuse tradition and experimentation into new, contemporary forms.

The emphasis of the major is on creating original scholarship, be it choreographic or written, that views dance within a specific cultural context, interrogates cultural assumptions, and is informed by a critical and reflective perspective.

Preregistration is possible for many dance courses. All students interested in registering for dance classes should access WesMaps concerning procedures for acceptance into specific courses. Students majoring in dance or indicating strong curricular commitment to dance will be given enrollment preference in all permission-of-instructor courses.

The Naugatuck Valley Community College Dance Program offers an AA degree in Dance, a 24-credit dance certificate making dancers work-force ready, and it offers all of the coursework necessary for dance teacher certification and cross-endorsement in the state of Connecticut.

With a varied curriculum from ballet and history to contemporary African and kinesiology, our dance program provides a wide range of meaningful experiences and opportunities, including regular guest artists, special workshops, and semesterly performance events.  Whether you are just starting out in your professional dance life, or a returning student looking to make a career change, Naugatuck Valley Community College Dance Program is an exciting and affordable option.

Musical Theatre School

The New York Film Academy’s musical theatre school offers aspiring musical theatre actors a one-of-a-kind opportunity to develop their skills as triple threat performers by studying with faculty who are working professionals on Broadway. Students enrolling in the musical theatre school work directly with instructors who have appeared in numerous Broadway and touring productions, top-rate regional theatre, opera, hit movie musicals, and television shows. They receive real world training that prepares them to achieve success in the industry, creating an educational experience few other musical theatre colleges can offer.
